The Institute of Bioethics was founded at the School of Medicine “A. Gemelli” of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore of Rome in 1992, in addition to the Centre of Bioethics existing since 1985.The first Director of the Institute was Prof. Elio Sgreccia until 2000. This was followed by an interim Direction of Prof. Antonio G. Spagnolo (2000-2002) and the Direction of Prof. Ignacio Carrasco de Paula (2002-2009). Since the 1 November 2009, the Director of the Institute of Bioethics is Prof. Antonio G. Spagnolo.
The Institute’s primary activities are the following: the first activity is represented by the research in both topics of “consolidated” and “emerging” bioethical debate.
The second activity is teaching, addressed to students of Medicine and Dentistry, to those Nursing and Midwives and to those of many degree courses for Health Care Professions organized by the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, as well as to several schools of Post-graduate medical degree. The Institute also coordinates the PhD in Bioethics, Masters and other specialization courses.
The third Institute’s activity is bioethical consulting in three different areas: trial protocols, clinical cases and health technologies.
